Dire Wolf Tattoo opened in 2015 with the intention of creating something different for Thousand Oaks. At the time, tattoo shops were still widely misunderstood, often seen as intimidating or unwelcoming. The goal from the beginning was to change that experience by building a studio rooted in real artistry, honesty, and respect for the people walking through the door.
The shop’s owner, Jeff Johnson, learned to tattoo locally in the Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks area, completing his apprenticeship in the early 2000s. Over the years that followed, he tattooed privately, worked in established shops throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, and traveled extensively to tattoo at conventions across the United States and abroad. Those years were spent learning from respected artists, refining technique, and gaining a deep understanding of what it takes to create tattoos that hold up over time. After returning home and seeing that Thousand Oaks had very few operating tattoo shops, the decision was made to open Dire Wolf Tattoo. From day one, the focus was on custom tattoo work, clear communication, and creating a space where people felt comfortable asking questions and learning about the process. Whether someone was getting their first tattoo or adding to an existing collection, the experience was meant to feel approachable and collaborative.
The shop opened with a single artist and quickly grew as demand increased. Within months, additional artists joined, and Dire Wolf Tattoo became a busy studio with a strong sense of community. That atmosphere has remained ever since. On most days, conversations flow naturally between artists and clients, and it is common for people meeting in the shop to form real connections. Over the years, friendships have been built, regulars have become part of the shop’s extended family, and the space has come to feel more like a gathering place than a traditional business.
